Local SEO for Malaysian Businesses: Google Business Profile Basics

For any business that serves customers in a specific area — a clinic, a workshop, a restaurant, a law firm — local SEO is often the highest-return marketing you can do, and the centre of it is a free tool: Google Business Profile. This is a practical guide to setting it up properly and the local ranking factors that follow from it.
Why local SEO matters more for service businesses
When someone searches "aircon service near me" or "dentist Petaling Jaya," Google shows a map with three business listings above the normal results — the "map pack." Those three spots get a large share of the clicks. Ranking there is mostly about your Google Business Profile and a handful of signals around it, which makes local SEO more achievable for an SME than competing on broad national keywords.
Setting up Google Business Profile properly
Claim and verify
Search your business name on Google. If a listing exists, claim it; if not, create one. Verification is usually by postcard, phone or video. Until it's verified, you can't manage it.
Get the core details exactly right
- Name — your real business name, not "Best Aircon Service KL." Keyword-stuffing the name is against the rules and can get the listing suspended.
- Category — pick the most specific primary category that fits, then add relevant secondary categories.
- Address — exactly as it appears elsewhere online. Consistency matters (see NAP below).
- Phone — a local number, matching your website.
- Hours — accurate, and updated for public holidays.
- Service area — if you go to customers rather than them coming to you, set the areas you cover.
Fill in everything else
Description, services with descriptions and prices, attributes, and real photos of your premises, team and work. Listings with complete information and photos rank better and convert better.
The ongoing signals that affect local ranking
Reviews
Volume, recency and rating of Google reviews are among the strongest local ranking factors. Ask satisfied customers to leave one — a direct link makes it easy. Reply to every review, positive and negative, professionally. Never buy reviews; Google detects and penalises it.
NAP consistency
Your Name, Address and Phone number should be identical everywhere they appear — your website, Facebook, directories, Waze. Inconsistent details (an old address, a different phone format) confuse Google about which business is which and weaken your local presence.
Local citations
Listings in relevant Malaysian directories and industry bodies, all with consistent NAP, reinforce that your business is real and located where you say. Quality over quantity — a few relevant ones beat dozens of spammy ones.
On-page local signals
Your website should make your location obvious: the address in the footer on every page, a contact page with an embedded map, and location mentioned naturally in your service page content. If you serve multiple areas, a page per area with genuinely distinct content (not the same text with the town name swapped) helps.
Google Business Profile posts
Posting updates, offers and events to your profile keeps it active, which is a mild positive signal and puts fresh content in front of people who find your listing.
A realistic first-month plan
- Claim and fully complete the Business Profile, with photos.
- Fix NAP consistency across your website and top five directory listings.
- Set up a simple process to ask happy customers for a review, with a direct link.
- Add or improve the address and map on your website's contact page and footer.
- Post to the profile weekly.
Local results usually move within a few weeks of getting the profile right and reviews coming in — faster than broader SEO.
