Facebook Messenger Chatbots: Are They Still Relevant in Malaysia?

Facebook Messenger Chatbots: Are They Still Relevant in Malaysia?

Facebook Messenger chatbots had a hype wave around 2017, then went quiet. For a lot of Malaysian businesses the Facebook Page is still where selling starts, so the fair question in 2026 is: are Messenger chatbots still worth doing, or has that moment passed?

The short answer

Yes, for businesses that get real enquiry volume through their Facebook Page — but the reasons are different now, and the rules are stricter. The 2017 wave failed because the bots were rigid keyword-matchers that frustrated people. Today's AI-based bots actually understand the question. And Meta has tightened messaging policy since, which is a good thing: it pushed out the spammy use cases and left the genuinely useful ones.

Where a Messenger chatbot earns its place

Your Page is a shopfront

Many Malaysian SMEs — fashion, F&B, beauty, gadgets — do a large share of their business through Page comments and Messenger. A boosted post can drop fifty messages in an hour. A bot that answers "berapa harga," "ready stock?" and "macam mana nak order" instantly keeps that surge from turning into missed sales.

Response time is public

Meta displays your Page's response rate and time. Slow replies are on show to every visitor. A bot handling first response keeps that badge fast even when your team is asleep or slammed.

After-hours coverage

Enquiries don't stop at 6pm. A bot answers the routine ones overnight and flags anything that needs a person for the morning, with the conversation attached.

What's changed since 2017

  • The AI is better. Modern bots answer from your actual content in natural language, in English and Bahasa Malaysia, rather than matching keywords to canned replies.
  • The 24-hour window. Meta's standard messaging policy lets you reply freely within 24 hours of a user's last message. Outside that, only approved message types are allowed. A well-built bot works within this cleanly.
  • Fewer gimmicks. The "subscribe to our broadcast" pattern that got abused is largely gone. The surviving use case is responsive: answering people who message you.

What it won't do

  • It won't replace your Page admins — they can jump into any conversation, and complex or sensitive chats should route to them.
  • It won't do proactive marketing blasts within Messenger — that's not what the policy allows, and trying invites restrictions.
  • It won't fix a Page with no traffic. A bot amplifies existing enquiry flow; it doesn't create it.

Messenger vs WhatsApp for Malaysian businesses

Both matter, and which to prioritise depends on where your customers actually message you. Younger and Facebook-native audiences, and businesses that grew on Facebook Marketplace or Page selling, get more Messenger volume. Broader consumer bases and B2B lean WhatsApp. Many businesses run a bot on both, sharing one knowledge base so the answers are consistent. If you're picking one to start, look at your last month of enquiries and count.

What setup involves

  1. Connect the bot to your Page's Messenger with the right permissions.
  2. Load your pricing, ordering steps and current promotions as its knowledge.
  3. Define what it answers versus what it routes to a person (complaints, custom orders, negotiations).
  4. Test common buyer journeys, then go live and refine from real conversations.

Typical cost for an SME is a setup fee from around RM1,499 plus a monthly fee from around RM299 depending on volume.

Where to go from here

If your Facebook Page generates enquiries you struggle to answer fast enough — especially after boosting a post — a Messenger bot with human handoff is still very much worth it.
